Victorian Taxidermy – Stuffed Female Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu (Uraeginthus Bengalus) in Ebonised Wall Dome

Circa 1890.

Quite the smallest wall dome I have ever come across, with a delightful water colour back drop of a mountainous scene with palm trees and well modelled ground work. Very much in the manner of James Gardner of London, albeit unlabelled.

The red-cheeked cordon-bleu: A very small finch measuring about 12.5 cm. Known for the male's distinctive red cheek patches, the females are similar in colouring but duller overall and notably lack the red cheek spot. They are common across much of central and eastern Africa, found in a variety of open habitats like thornbush, savannas, and cultivated areas, but typically not inside dense forests.
