Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A traditional Spanish home altar, often constructed as a carved triptych cabinet or retablo, is a portable devotional structure crafted for private prayer in domestic spaces. Originating within Catholic devotional traditions, these objects feature sculpted or painted representations of saints, Christ, and sacred motifs.

Craftsmen carved these shrines primarily from regional woods, applying a gesso base before hand-painting with tempera or oil pigments. Decorative elements often incorporated gold leaf, gesso relief work, and brass or iron hinges for opening the cabinet doors.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 exhibit hand-carved joinery, micro-cracking across the polychrome pigment layers, and gentle oxidation on metallic or gilded accents. Natural wear surrounding handles, bases, and door margins further distinguishes genuine antique items from modern reproductions.

Devotional cabinets serve as distinct focal points when placed atop a contemporary sideboard, console table, or within an open shelving unit. Surrounding the detailed polychrome woodwork with neutral wall tones and minimal decor creates a balanced contrast between old and new styles.

Polychrome wood requires a stable indoor humidity level away from direct radiators and bright sunlight to prevent paint flaking or wood expansion. Maintenance should be limited to gentle dusting using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive waxes.
