Pair Of Samson Porcelain Guinea Fowl, Paris, C.1845

£750    $1,012    €861
A rare cabinet-sized pair of Samson porcelain guinea fowl, produced in Paris around 1845 after Kaendler’s renowned Meissen birds for the Japanese Palace. Each figure has a magenta-toned neck, black-spotted plumage and a gilded beak, supported on a foliage-moulded base. Both pieces bear underglaze blue crossed-swords-type marks typical of Samson’s 19th-century interpretations of admired 18th-century models.

Small variations in weight and modelling confirm genuine hand production. Samson made this subject in two sizes; the present 16–16.5 cm cabinet version is considered the more attractive for domestic display. Pairs of this model are notably less common than single birds.
