Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The mechanical metronome was patented by Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel in Amsterdam around 1814, but Johann Nepomuk Maelzel copied and marketed the device under his own name in London and Paris from 1816, establishing the iconic pyramidal wooden case design still recognised today.

Victorian metronomes typically feature a tapered wooden housing crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, paired with internal brass clockwork mechanisms, steel pendulum rods, and engraved brass maker plaques.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail or mitred joints in the wooden casing, mechanical spring-wound clockwork movements, aged patination on brass components, and often paper maker labels or stamped metal seals rather than modern stamped steel parts.

An antique metronome can be positioned on a piano top, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to add architectural interest, tactile warmth, and a touch of historical curiosity to a room scheme.

Keep mechanical metronomes away from direct sunlight and high humidity to protect the wood finish. Avoid over-winding the mainspring mechanism and have the clockwork serviced periodically by a professional horologist to ensure proper function.
