Description

A good Staffordshire Tobacco Jar featuring a woman drinking tea. It is very beautifully presented with much detail. The woman wears a dress with handprinted flowers and a table beside her bears a teapot and milk jug. It is surprising that these jars were presented as "tobacco jars." However, this piece is crying out to be filled with sweets or biscuits .

This piece is from a collection of eight jars.

Circa 1900-1910.

Staffordshire pottery figures and tobacco jars were largely produced in the Staffordshire Potteries region of England from the late 18th century through the Victorian era, depicting popular characters, animals, and historical events for domestic display.

These items were typically made from earthenware or porcelain, hand-painted under or over the glaze with vibrant enamel colours, and often finished with gilt highlights.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit crazing in the glaze, hand-painted brushwork with minor inconsistencies, ventilation or firing holes at the base, and weight appropriate for earthenware or porcelain from the period.

They can be displayed as standalone decorative objects on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or side tables to introduce historical character and colourful ceramic texture to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth to avoid damaging fragile enamel paints or gilding, keep out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and avoid exposure to moisture.
