A hearth crane is a swivelling wrought iron bracket installed inside an open fireplace to hold kettles and cooking pots. Originating in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it allowed cooks to swing heavy iron vessels over the fire or away from direct heat to control cooking temperatures safely.
