Victorian card tables gained immense popularity during the 19th century as domestic socialising and parlour games became central to upper and middle-class home life.

These tables were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, featuring intricate hand-carved elements, pivot-action folding tops, and often concealed internal wells for storing playing cards.

Authenticity is determined by examining traditional joinery, timber grain, patination, hand-cut screws, and the quality of the veneer work alongside period-accurate hardware.

Placed against a wall in a living room or hallway with the top folded closed, it functions as a console table, offering a surface for lamps or decorative objects while retaining its versatility for expansion when entertaining.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically apply appropriate furniture wax to nourish the finish.
