A Rare Hammersley Hand-painted Chrysanthemum Breakfast Set, C.1887–1912

19th century
Description

An exquisite hand-painted English bone china breakfast set by Hammersley, one of the well-respected Staffordshire porcelain manufacturers of the 19th century.

Dating from the Art Nouveau period (c.1887–1912), the set comprises a cup, saucer, side plate and dessert plate, all lavishly decorated with vibrant chrysanthemum flowers in layered pink, cream and lilac tones on a gilded background.

The forms are delicately fluted and lobed, and the china itself is of the finest quality—thin, translucent, and light. Unlike transfer-printed designs of the time, this set features completely hand-painted decoration, suggesting a possible private commission. A rare and outstanding find.

Dimensions:

Cup: 7cm high, 250ml

Saucer: 14.5cm diameter

Side plate: 18.2cm diameter

Dessert plate: 20.5cm diameter

Condition: Excellent, no damage or restoration and only minimal handling ware.

Declaration

Touch of Time Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
