Antique Game of Squails

19th century
For Sale by Opus Antiques
Description

An antique game of Squails, complete with its original sixteen wooden discs, the  wooden swoggle and the lead jack. The  mahogany box has a sliding lid and is almost certainly from the famous games maker John Jacques.

Great  to be complete. The box measures 21.5cm w x 11.5cm d x 3cm h.

C1890

The old English game of Squails was played on a round table and the objective was to hit discs with the heel of the hand from the edge of the table at a small lead target in the centre called a "jack". If the jack was moved more than six inches it was replaced. Once all sixteen Squails had been played, they scored 16 for the squail nearest to the target down to 1 for the squail furthest away. Often, a squail would be directed with the aim of knocking an opponents squail away, as much as to end up near the target, in the same manner as for bowls.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Squails is a 19th-century British tabletop game derived from indoor bowls. Popular during the Victorian era, players used the palms of their hands to flick turned wooden discs called squails from the edge of a table towards a central target marker.

Traditional squails sets feature turned hardwood discs, typically stained or painted in contrasting colours like red and green. Storage boxes were crafted from mahogany or oak, while the central target and measuring tools were made from turned wood, metal, or bone.

Authentic 19th-century sets generally include turned wooden discs with distinct concentric turned rings, original lead or wooden target weight, and a triangular wooden measuring tool known as a swoggle. Original printed paper instruction labels inside the box lid also confirm era origin.

An antique game set can be styled open on a living room coffee table, bookshelf, or sideboard to display the colourful internal pieces. Styled alongside vintage leather-bound books or brass accessories, it provides historical texture to modern schemes.

Maintain antique wooden game components by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid solvents or water, which can damage original paintwork and paper labels, and store away from direct sunlight to prevent wood warping and colour fading.
