Description

A refined late Georgian tea table Veneered in plum-pudding mahogany with contrasting crossbanding and delicate line inlay. The rectangular top with rounded front corners folds open on brass hinges to reveal a plain mahogany surface, supported by a single swing leg to form a larger surface.

Reflecting the neoclassical restraint of the late 18th century, its warm tone and subtle detailing lend a quietly accomplished presence. An ideal size for use as a side or lamp table, with the option to open for occasional use when additional surface space is needed.

Presented in very good antique condition with a mellow, well-aged patina and minor wear consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home. An early 20th-century dealer’s plaque to the back rail (James Reeve Ltd, Birmingham) indicates long-standing provenance within the trade.

English, circa 1790.

Georgian fold-over tea tables became popular during the 18th century as the consumption of tea transformed from a medicinal habit into a prominent social ritual among the elite, requiring specialised furniture that could be easily expanded for hosting.

These tables were typically constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany, often featuring highly figured veneers like plum pudding mahogany or flame mahogany, supported by hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional hinge mechanisms, and tapered legs.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct joinery, natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged or early brass hardware, and a deep patina developed through centuries of oxidisation, distinguishing them from later reproduction furniture.

An antique tea table can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a console against an entryway wall or positioned beneath a mirror, creating a functional surface that introduces warmth, texture, and historical contrast to minimalist or modern decor.

Preserving antique mahogany involves keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, applying quality natural beeswax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
