Antique Victorian Rosewood Card Table C.1860

19th century
Sold 8 February 2026 · Founders Antiques
This “Antique Victorian Rosewood Card Table C.1860” found a buyer.

It was listed by Founders Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

An impressive mid-Victorian card table crafted in richly figured rosewood, the elegantly shaped top swivelling and folding open to reveal a baize-lined playing surface framed in rosewood. The table stands on a twin pedestal and stretcher base with bold carved details, exemplifying the accomplished cabinet work of the mid-19th century.

The rosewood has mellowed beautifully, developing a deep lustrous tone that gives the piece real presence. When closed it serves naturally as a side table or console in a hallway or living space, and when required it opens for use as a sociable card table.

Presented in very good antique condition with a clean later baize interior, a mature patina and minor wear consistent with age. There are old, inactive worm traces to some of the softer secondary timbers to the underside, light nibbles to the stretcher carving, and some fine, perfectly stable veneer splits along the moulded edges as shown. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

Closed - H: 75 W: 97 D: 53.5 cm

A Victorian card table is a specialized piece of furniture designed for parlour games such as whist or chess, featuring a fold-over top that doubles its surface area when opened.

These tables were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, often featuring intricate hand-carved pedestals, turned stretchers, and figured wood veneers.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-turned components, natural timber patination, and traditional hand-applied polish rather than modern synthetic finishes.

Positioned closed against a wall, it functions as a striking console, or placed centrally with the top open, it acts as a characterful accent piece that bridges traditional and modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and periodically applying quality beeswax to nourish the timber.
