A Fine Japanese Kutani Model of a Shishi (Buddhist Lion)

A beautifully crafted Kutani porcelain model of a Shishi, or Buddhist lion, exquisitely decorated in polychrome enamels and rich gilt detailing, dating to the Meiji period (circa 1900).

The figure is modelled in a dynamic pose, with its body curving gracefully—hindquarters raised and forelegs lowered—as if in a protective or warning stance. The open mouth, revealing finely defined teeth and tongue, conveys power and animation. The surface is richly decorated in tones of green, yellow, iron red, black, and gold, characteristic of high-quality Kutani ware.

Approximate dimensions: 25.5 cm high x 23.5 cm long x 18 cm wide.

There is minor professional restoration to the ear, tail, and possibly some fur on the back leg, all sympathetically executed.

A most attractive and well-proportioned example of Meiji-period Kutani artistry.

Kutani ware originates from Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan and is recognised for its vivid overglaze enamels and detailed hand-painted decoration. Shishi, or Buddhist guardian lions, are traditional mythological creatures depicted in ceramics to symbolise protection and ward off negative energy.

Kutani figures are crafted from kaolin clay porcelain or dense earthenware, molded, and high-fired. They are subsequently decorated with vitreous enamel glazestraditionally in five colours known as gosai: green, yellow, red, purple, and dark bluealongside hand-applied gold leaf details before undergoing a lower-temperature second firing.

Authentic Kutani pieces display distinctive multi-coloured enamel glazes with slight raised textures on the surface. Look for hand-painted details rather than printed transfers, character marks or signatures on the base, and age-consistent wear to unglazed foot rims.
