A trade label for the noted W. K Petherick of 26 East Reach, Taunton, is pasted to the back board within the case.
Walter Knighton Petherick: An elusive Victorian taxidermist that is often over looked, examples of his work remain scarce. However, his skills as a taxidermist are remarkable, his cases are made to an exceptional quality with great care taken in sealing the glass and thus protecting them from insects. The following is an extract from ‘An historical directory of Taxidermists’
“Peculiar sadness has been evoked among their numerous friends by the death of Mr and Mrs Walter K Petherick which took place last week within the short space of three days….. Mr Petherick who had been overwhelmed with grief at the illness of his wife, expired from heart failure on the following Saturday evening, his age being 65”
This case being a fine example, retaining all its original glass and is in excellent state of preservation. The case coming fresh to the market this week direct from the family where it has been for the last 150 or so years.
