Description

Probably of English origin, this remarkable cotton patchwork quilt cover is one one the most detailed and finely worked examples I have seen. It is composed of myriad cotton hexagonal patches around a large central hexagonal medallion that forms a kaleidoscope of colour and movement. It must have taken literally years to make. The original printed floral border and lining is intact. Clean and in excellent condition, a really good example of the craft.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century English quilts often feature meticulous hand-pieced geometry, such as the hexagonal mosaic pattern, utilizing scrap fabrics from everyday garments saved and repurposed by makers.

Traditional covers typically incorporate a patchwork top made from cotton, linen, and wool remnants, assembled over paper templates, backed with plain cotton, and lightly stuffed or layered.

Authenticity is identified through early textile printing techniques like block printing or copperplate printing, hand-stitching thread analysis, fabric ageing characteristics, and traditional paper template remnants sometimes left inside.

An antique textile can be draped across the foot of a bed, folded over a neutral sofa, or professionally mounted and framed behind UV-protective glass as a statement wall hanging.

Preservation requires storing or displaying textiles away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding hanging them by their weight alone, and refraining from washing with modern chemical detergents.
