Huge Antique Swiss Thoune Hand Painted Majolica Charger, Signed, 40cm C1880/1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Impressive Antique Swiss Thun Majolica Charger – Hand Painted, 40cm (c.1880–1900)

A striking and substantial antique Swiss Thun (Thoune) Majolica charger, dating from around 1880–1900. This exceptional piece showcases superb hand-painted decoration, featuring finely executed detail and rich, vibrant colours characteristic of the Thun pottery tradition.

Measuring an impressive 40cm in diameter and weighing 2.1kg, this charger has real presence and decorative impact. It is fitted with original hanging holes and a metal wire suspension hook to the rear rim, making it ready for wall display.

Although unsigned — as many Thun pieces of this period were — the quality of the painting clearly reflects the work of a skilled hand from this renowned Swiss workshop.

Condition: Excellent antique condition overall. Expected age-related crazing to the central painted area, the odd blemish, and some small flakes and surface wear around the suspension wire (as shown). None of these detracts from its impressive visual appeal.

A highly decorative and beautifully painted example of late 19th-century Swiss Majolica — perfect as a statement wall piece or addition to a quality ceramics collection.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Thoune ceramic production originated near Thun in Switzerland during the late nineteenth century. The style gained international popularity during the Victorian era for its distinctive dark lead-glazed backgrounds decorated with hand-painted slipware floral patterns and painted regional landscapes.

Majolica chargers were formed from earthenware or terracotta clay and decorated using slipware techniques. Artisans applied coloured liquid clay (slip) and metal-oxide glazes by hand before firing the piece to create vibrant polychrome designs on a glossy ground.

Authentic pieces feature dense slip-trailed floral borders, often displaying local flora such as edelweiss, surrounding a central hand-painted scene. Look for impressed maker marks, incised signatures, model numbers, or regional inscriptions on the underside of the earthenware base.

Display the charger on a plate stand atop a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to create an engaging visual centerpiece. Alternatively, mount it directly onto a feature wall among framed artwork to integrate traditional craftsmanship into contemporary room schemes.

Clean antique majolica using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or an antistatic brush to remove surface dust. Avoid immersing lead-glazed earthenware in water or applying abrasive chemical cleansers, as moisture can enter fine glaze crazing and damage the ceramic fabric.
