Rare 18th Century Irish Flintlock Blunderbuss with Spring Bayonet by the Renowned Irish Gunsmith Egan, Parsonstown (Birr).

18th century
Description

An Antique Irish Flintlock Blunderbuss with Spring Bayonet, signed by the renowned Irish Gunsmith, "EGAN of Parsonstown (Birr)", County Offaly, Ireland.

With 14 inch barrel & Irish reqistratior mark, engraved with makers name, full length stock with brass furniture.

?This is a well-preserved example of a classic 18th to early 19th-century self-defense or coach gun, highly desirable among collectors of Irish antique weaponry.

?Key Features & Provenance:

?Maker & Origin: Engraved clearly on the brass barrel as "Egan - Parsonstown." Egan was a known and respected gunsmith operating in Parsonstown (the historical name for the town of Birr) during this period.

?Dating: The firearm features a Flintlock mechanism, which places its manufacture firmly in the late Georgian era, circa 1780–1820.

?Barrel: Features a distinctive old brass barrel with a flared, bell-mouth muzzle. The brass construction was often favored for its resistance to corrosion and its aesthetic appeal on civilian and mail-coach defense weapons.

?Spring Bayonet: Fitted with a fully functional spring-loaded sping bayonet (or "flick bayonet") mounted above the barrel, a practical feature allowing for quick deployment of a last-resort defensive weapon after firing the single shot.

?Furniture & Engraving: The piece is finished with attractive brass furniture, including the ornate butt plate (heel plate) tang, which is lightly engraved with foliate (leaf/scroll) designs. The lock-plate also features simple line engraving, consistent with regional Irish craftsmanship.

?Historical Markings: The brass butt plate is stamped with what appears to be an inventory or unit mark: G.I.R. / G.I.B. 888. These types of markings often signify the piece belonged to a local militia, volunteer corps, or a government/commercial entity in Ireland.

?Condition & Notes:

?The mechanism is complete and the flintlock action operates correctly (though, as an antique, it is sold as a collector's item and should not be fired).

?The wood stock has a rich patina consistent with age.

?The brass work shows a lovely aged patina.

?The unique historical markings on the butt plate add significant character and research potential.

Condition

Two old cracks to stock, please study photographs. Otherwise excellent original condition consistent with age and use.

?

Dimensions: 74.5cm long

The blunderbuss falls under Section 58(2) of the UK/Irish Firearms Acts as pre-1900 antiques, requiring no license for possession.
