Description

A mid Victorian mahogany pedestal side table, the well-figured rectangular top finished on all sides featuring a chamfered edge, supported on a tapering octagonal column with a moulded collar above a quadriform base set on four bold bun feet.

The design is restrained yet well-proportioned, showing the transitional style of the period, with lingering Regency influence meeting Victorian tastes. Its scale makes it particularly versatile, equally at home against a wall, beside a chair or standing freely as a centrepiece.

Presented in very good antique condition with a rich patina and light surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

FAQs

Victorian tables typically feature substantial timber construction, often utilizing dense hardwoods like mahogany with rich grain patterns, drawing inspiration from various historical revivals while prioritizing domestic utility.

Cabinet makers of this period predominantly used solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak, frequently incorporating turned central pillars and weighted support bases.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, such as hand-cut joinery, traditional timber shrinkage, patina development consistent with age, and the presence of old hand-turned components rather than modern machine tooling.

This piece works effectively as an occasional surface in a living space or study, where its dark wood tone provides a grounded, historical contrast to minimalist or modern furnishings.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent splitting, and apply traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the grain and preserve the surface finish.
