The William and Mary style flourished in England from approximately 1689 to 1702, influenced by Dutch design following the ascension of William III and Mary II. It is characterised by architectural symmetry, turned legs, and the introduction of sophisticated veneering techniques such as marquetry and burr walnut.

Traditional credence tables are typically constructed using native hardwoods like oak or walnut as a structural base, often adorned with highly figured decorative veneers such as burr walnut. Construction methods include pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails for drawers, and specialised gateleg or pivoting mechanisms to support the fold-over top.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, tool marks from hand-held saws, historic oxidisation, and the composition of secondary woods used inside drawer linings. Genuine period pieces will exhibit natural wear patterns, handmade brass hardware appropriate to the period, and construction methods consistent with late 17th-century craftsmanship.

Pairing a historic wooden table with modern surroundings creates a curated, layered aesthetic that highlights the warmth and grain of the timber. Placing contemporary ceramic vessels or minimalist lighting upon the surface provides a striking visual contrast against the ornate historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood and delicate veneers from splitting or warping. Regular gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth and periodic application of high-quality beeswax will maintain the finish without damaging the patina.
