Delightful Late 18th-century/early 19th-century Black Basalt Large Bowl

19th century
Description

Fabulous late 18th-century/early 19th-century black basalt large bowl, featuring a neoclassical design and engine-turned body. Black basalt is a hard, dense, fine-grained stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century, made from a reddish-brown clay that turns black during firing. This is one piece from a recently acquired collection; look out for the other pieces. Incredibly elegant and displays extremely well. The bowl depicts a basket weave design decoration around the body. No maker's mark, as was common at the time, so it could have been produced by numerous top-quality companies of the era c1800s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in Staffordshire during the 18th century, black basalt is a dense, unglazed stoneware known for its matte finish and dark black colour.

It was crafted from local iron-rich clay mixed with manganese, fired in an oxidising atmosphere, and decorated using engine-turning lathes or moulded reliefs.

Authentic pieces exhibit a smooth tactile surface, precise engine-turned geometric patterns or sharp relief work, and a dense, heavy weight characteristic of high-fired stoneware.

Position the piece as a sculptural accent on a light timber surface or stone countertop to create strong tonal contrast within contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and clean using warm water with mild detergent, avoiding abrasive materials that could mark the unglazed surface.
