Treen refers to small, functional or decorative wooden objects made by hand, often on a lathe, dating from the early modern period through to the Victorian era. These pieces reflect domestic life and traditional craftsmanship before the advent of mass manufacturing.

Early treen was predominantly crafted from domestic hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, sycamore, and maple, shaped using a foot-powered or pole lathe. Craftsmen selected tight-grained timbers to withstand the turning process and everyday use.

Authentic pieces exhibit tool marks consistent with hand-turning, genuine patination developed through handling and waxing over centuries, and shrinkage cracks appropriate to age. Modern reproductions often lack the subtle irregularities and depth of colour found in genuine early items.

Antique treen provides tactile warmth and textural contrast, making it ideal for styling on minimalist sideboards, open shelving, or coffee tables. Grouping objects of varying heights creates a sophisticated focal point in both traditional and modern rooms.

Maintain antique treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight, central heating, and high humidity to prevent timber splitting. Periodically apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain and protect the historical patina.
