FAQs

Dutch Delft pottery originated in the 17th century in the city of Delft in the Netherlands, evolving as a European attempt to imitate costly Chinese blue and white porcelain imported by the Dutch East India Company.

Antique Delft pieces are traditionally crafted from local clay, fired into an earthenware body, and coated with an opaque white tin-glaze. Cobalt blue pigment is then hand-painted directly onto the unfired glaze before a final clear lead glaze is applied for firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, subtle hand-painted brushwork imperfections, and occasionally maker marks or initials on the base. The weight, thickness of the earthenware body, and characteristic tin-glaze pooling also aid in verification.

Antique Delft items provide a striking focal point when displayed on neutral mantels, open shelving, or console tables, contrasting clean modern lines with traditional craftsmanship and vibrant cobalt blue patterns.

Preserve antique Delftware by dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding immersion in water to protect fragile historical glazes, and keeping the pieces away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations.
