This Victorian centre table dates from 1880 and takes the form of an English Country House rosewood piece finished in rich brown. The serpentine-edged oval top has a moulded shaped edge and sits above four cabriole legs raised on the original brass castors. These legs are united by an intricately carved stretcher featuring a carved finial to the centre. The timber exhibits natural grain variation throughout, and the piece measures 73 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 121 cm deep. In a modern interior, this freestanding table works well as a central surface in a large hallway, a library, or a formal living room. It provides a practical display platform for decorative objects, lamps, or books while maintaining clear floor circulation around its curved perimeter.

Maintain rosewood furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber movement, drying, or veneer lifting.

Position the table centrally in an entrance hall or drawing room to serve as an architectural focal point. Complement the dark rosewood timber with neutral wall tones, contemporary ceramics, or minimal floral arrangements to balance the detailed historical carving.

Authentic pieces feature distinctive dense, dark grain patterning characteristic of 19th-century rosewood imports. Inspect the underside for hand-worked joinery, age-appropriate timber shrinkage, original brass fittings, and hand-carved scroll or cabriole supports.

Victorian centre tables were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, walnut, and mahogany. High-end pieces utilized solid timber combined with figured cut veneers, assembled using hand-cut dovetail joints, wood turnings, and concealed brass castors.

A Victorian centre table is a prominent, freestanding table designed to sit in the middle of a drawing room, parlour, or foyer. Popular throughout the 19th century, these tables often feature prominent carving, rich timber veneers such as rosewood or mahogany, and ornate pedestal bases.
