Rob Hall Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
There was a Revenue Police in Bristol, another port, but little documentary evidence is available. A 19th century Tipstaff sold in 2016 which was inscribed "Revenue Police, Bristol". In the 19th century the Revenue Police in Ireland was created to take over from the army to assist the Excise in still hunting where illegal alcohol was being produced to avoid taxes. It seems as though an English Revenue Police would have assisted in the Excise at the time, although documentary evidence is sparse. From the collar and thick solid chain, Cosher must have been a rather fierce beast to assist the Excise men in their duties. An extremely rare, probably unique piece in excellent condition with the original very substantial chain.
