Victorian Taxidermy- Kingfisher in Wall Dome by Peter Spicer

19th century
Description

Gilt frame with carved crest of flowers, the bird superbly modelled in a snow scene with a delightful water colour back drop, all so typical of Spicer's finest work.

An early case by the great man himself before the company merged into Peter Spicer & Sons.

With unusually large trade label to verso which lets us date the case quite accurately to between 1871 - 1876.

The label so large that it is pasted over the two supporting iron straps. Spicer was quick to adopt this method of screwing metal straps to the rear of the backboard of his wall domes, presumably to stop any movement and the dome becoming loose.

Additionally, to the verso is written in pencil “right side of window” possibly there was originally more than one, and possibly an order from an important client, hence the oversize label, gilded frame and central carved finial of which I have only seen a few.

We can speculate for ever, but what is for sure it is a delightful little case that has the magic and has me hooked. I absolutely love it.

For more information on this remarkable Victorian Taxidermy firm see “A Record of Spicer’s” a book covering the history of this famous firm. Published by myself (Robert Chinnery) back in 2001.
