Description

A sweet 18th century porcelain cream boat of "low Chelsea ewer" shape, with spiral fluted walls with moulded acanthus details around the base and an ornate shaped handle with small outer spur and kicked out thumb rest. Made by the Caughley manufactory, printed with the "Fence" pattern, copied almost identically from Worcester. Lovely, crisp printed image, a small floral device inside the base and a double blue band inside the scallop shaped rim. Unmarked, c.1780.

These cream boats were made at Worcester also in an identical shape and, where unmarked, can be very tricky to tell them apart. Very subtle variations in the pattern, the potting and and a slight difference in the curve of the thumb rest shows that this example is Caughley. Reference: Caughley & Worcester Porcelains by Godden.

it measures 11cm (4 5/16") long, 6.3cm (2 1/2) high and 7.7cm (2 5/8") wide.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. Minor discolouration where the glaze is thin, around the foot, and some spots on the rim and the handle thumb rest. Minor handling wear, an expected slight dullness to the glaze at the spout rim.

Caughley porcelain refers to the soft-paste and hard-paste ceramic wares manufactured at the Salopian China Manufactory in Shropshire, England, predominantly during the late 18th century under the direction of Thomas Turner.

These vessels were typically formed from soft-paste porcelain clay bodies, hand-moulded or cast, and hand-painted or transfer-printed with cobalt blue oxide before being glazed and high-fired in a kiln.

Authentic pieces are identified by their characteristic glaze pooling, specific cobalt blue transfer or painted motifs such as the Fence pattern, historical potting flaws, and occasionally underglaze blue factory marks like an S or crescent.

Antique blue and white porcelain pieces add historic texture and contrast when displayed within open shelving units, glass-fronted cabinets, or styled subtly on occasional furniture surfaces.

Antique porcelain should be washed strictly by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and sudden thermal shock to protect the fragile glaze and body.
