A 19th century English mulberry transferware sugar bowl with original domed cover, made in Staffordshire around 1840. This decorative piece features a deep berry-purple transfer print of children in a classical garden with a beehive, and a high finial with a matching printed motif. The bowl is fitted with lion mask handles with applied rings, reflecting the neoclassical taste popular in Victorian England. Matching hand-painted letters in underglaze purple are present on both bowl and lid, typical marks of period Staffordshire wares. Notably, the transfer-printed scenes on both the bowl and lid are closely based on the neoclassical designs of Adam Buck (1759–1833), one of Regency England’s most influential illustrators.
This is a particularly fine example of mulberry transferware, which is much rarer than other colorways and highly regarded by collectors, especially when both bowl and lid survive together. The strong color, crisp trans...fer, and well-preserved condition add to its appeal.
Condition:
Minor enamel loss to the tip of the finial. Otherwise, excellent antique condition. No cracks, chips, or restorations.
Dimensions:
Height with lid: 12 cm
Diameter at rim: 10.3 cm
