A Fine Moroccan Snaphance Jezail Musket with Silver Inlay Decoration. Circa 1889

19th century
Description

The Fine hardwood stock is inlaid with geometric probably silver decorations. The date showing is AH 1307 which began on September 6, 1889.

This dating is consistent with late Ottoman period firearms. The technique used here appears to be traditional "damascening" or wire inlay, where thin silver wire or strips are hammered into carved grooves in the wood. The silver would be secured mechanically by the pressure fit and sometimes with small amounts of adhesive. On some lower-grade weapons, brass or other white metals might be used, but the appearance and the quality of workmanship visible of this musket suggests this is genuine silver inlay work, which was the hallmark of fine Ottoman gunsmithing.

The butt is flared in the traditional Moroccan style, with a bone tail, often designed to be braced against the chest or shoulder. The inlay work and decorative details reflect both the aesthetic and martial traditions of North African arms.

This is a genuine period piece, not a modern reproduction, and would make an excellent addition to a collection of antique arms or Islamic/Oriental militaria.

:

Mechanism complete; mechanically functional but slips when fully cocked & very stiff.

Some wear and minor losses consistent with age

Looks to be the Original ramrod.

Top jaw screw possibly replaced.

No active woodworm or restoration

Aged patina throughout with attractive wear
