William IV Mahogany Drum Table

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

An outstanding example of early 19th-century English craftsmanship, this superb mahogany drum table dates to circa 1825 and is offered in beautiful showroom condition, ready to enhance any traditional or period-style interior.

This handsome and substantially sized piece features a finely polished circular mahogany top, showcasing the rich grain and depth of colour. Around the frieze are a total of eight drawers—four functional and four dummy drawers—providing symmetry and aesthetic balance. Each drawer is adorned with cockbeaded fronts, oak linings, and retains its original brass locks with turned wooden handles.

The table is supported by a finely crafted octagonal central pedestal, transitioning gracefully into a circular base, and raised on elegantly carved scroll feet, each fitted with original brass casters for ease of movement. The base design is both structurally robust and visually striking, embodying the refined style of the Regency period.

This piece boasts a deep, lustrous polish and a wonderfully rich patina that has developed beautifully over time. It would make a striking centrepiece in a study, library, or formal reception room, combining both functionality and classical design.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A drum table, historically referred to as a rent table, is a circular table featuring a deep frieze containing drawers around its perimeter. Originating in the 18th century and continuing into the William IV era (18301837), these tables were primarily designed for writing, reading, and administrative record-keeping in private libraries or offices.

William IV drum tables were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany and embellished with highly figured flame mahogany veneers. Internal drawer linings often utilised oak or pine, while structural joints featured hand-cut dovetails and solid pedestal bases supported by brass castors.

Authentic William IV drum tables demonstrate design characteristics typical of the 1830s, including heavier proportions than Regency predecessors, bold turned or faceted pedestal columns, and carved scroll or lotus-leaf feet. Original drawers will exhibit period hand-dovetailed construction and original brass locks.

A drum table works well as a central focal point in a spacious entrance hall, grand foyer, or home office. In modern settings, placing a sculptural lamp or floral display on top while utilizing the perimeter drawers for concealed storage balances historical design with utility.

Maintain mahogany timber by positioning the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying or fading of the veneer. Dust regularly with a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically to preserve the original surface patina.
