Transferware is a method of decorating pottery where a copper-plate engraving is printed onto paper and transferred onto the ceramic body prior to glazing. Popularised in Britain during the late eighteenth century, blue cobalt oxide was the most common pigment used due to its ability to withstand high firing temperatures.

These platters were typically crafted from earthenware or pearlware, a refined white ceramic body featuring a faint cobalt-tinted lead glaze. The decorative print relied on cobalt blue mineral pigments applied under a clear protective glaze layer.
