FAQs

Console tables gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in 17th and 18th century France and Italy, designed specifically to stand against walls beneath mirrors or windows in grand reception rooms.

Authentic period pieces are constructed from carved timber, traditionally gessoed and hand-gilded with gold leaf, topped with a fitted slab of marble such as Carrara.

Authentication involves examining the hand-carved details, the application and ageing of the gesso and gold leaf ground, hand-cut joinery, and the natural weathering and thickness of the marble top.

Pair the ornate traditional craftsmanship with minimalist modern elements, such as a simple contemporary abstract painting or a clean-lined mirror hung directly above, to create a balanced focal point.

Maintain gilt wood by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners or chemical polishes which can strip the delicate gold leaf finish, and protecting the marble top from acidic spills.
