This Japanese netsuke dates from the Taisho or early Showa period in the early 20th century, taking the form of a curved cream-coloured boar tusk. The object is fashioned from organic material and finished with yasha dyeing and inking, complemented by inlaid eyes. High-relief carving covers the surface with a detailed Japanese dragon alongside swirling cloud motifs, showing the dragon head, scales, claws, and tail along the curve. The tusk measures 1 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative piece suits display on a bookshelf within a gentleman's library setting. The curved tusk form rests alongside its storage box while remaining suitable for cabinet display or collection appreciation. The carving catches the light on a library shelf or desk display area, adding historical character to a study room interior.

Originating in 17th-century Japan, netsuke were functional carved toggles used to anchor suspended pouches or containers (sagemono) to the sash (obi) of a traditional pocketless kimono.

Carvers historically used organic materials including boxwood, ebony, ivory, boar tusk, stag antler, and bone, selecting materials based on availability, texture, and structural resilience.

Authentic period examples exhibit smooth natural wear around functional cord holes (himotoshi), subtle surface patination, and age-related micro-crazing consistent with natural organic materials.

Small carved works are frequently displayed within glass-fronted curiosity cabinets, arranged on acrylic stands upon bookshelves, or placed under glass cloches in library settings.

Keep organic carvings in stable humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight; dust gently with a soft dry brush and avoid liquid cleaners that risk damaging aged surfaces.
