Military compasses issued during the First World War, such as the Mark V, were essential precision instruments used by officers in the trenches for navigation and map reading under harsh field conditions.

These pieces were typically housed in nickel-plated brass or sterling silver cases, featuring glass watch-style crystals, enamel dials, and delicate brass internal dampening components.

Authentic pieces usually feature makers marks, military broad arrow stamps, specific model designations like Mark V, and serial numbers engraved on the interior case or dial bezel.

Placed on a desk, within a glass display cabinet, or styled on a bookshelf, these instruments add a touch of historic sophistication and curated curiosity to a room.

Keep the object in a stable environment away from high humidity and direct sunlight, and clean the metal case gently with a dry microfibre cloth without using abrasive polishes.
