Victorian majolica is a type of colourful, lead-glazed earthenware that gained immense popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century, famously showcased by Minton at the 1851 Great Exhibition.

Majolica pieces are crafted from moulded earthenware clay, finished with an opaque tin-lead glaze containing metallic oxide pigments that create vibrant, glossy colours when fired.

Authentic pieces often feature factory impressed marks, registration diamonds, or shape numbers on the base, alongside characteristic weight, crazing in the glaze, and detailed hand-finishing.

Majolica works well as a focal point on large dining tables, sideboards, or open shelving, contrasting sharply against minimalist backdrops to highlight its rich colours and sculptural form.

Clean antique majolica gently with a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp sponge, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive scrubbing, and immersion in water to protect the delicate antique glaze.
