Victorian papier mache furniture gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly in manufacturing centres like Birmingham. The process involved layering paper pulp with glue and resin under heavy pressure, resulting in a durable material that was then lacquered and often inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

These pieces were constructed using compressed paper pulp combined with size, resin, and paste, moulded over a wooden armature or base for structural integrity. The surface was finished with multiple coats of black japan lacquer, hand-painted details, gilt highlights, and finely cut mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay.

Authentic pieces typically feature substantial weight despite being made of paper pulp, due to the density of the material and the wooden internal framing. Look for craquelure in the lacquer, hand-painted botanical or figurative motifs, iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay, and sometimes maker stamps on the underside.

This type of table serves as a striking accent piece that pairs well with minimalist contemporary furniture to create a contrasting eclectic aesthetic. It functions effectively beside an armchair or as a display surface for small decorative objects in a living room.

Preserve lacquerware by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and cracking of the surface finish. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using liquid cleaners, waxes, or silicones which can damage the historic lacquer and painted decoration.
