This nineteenth-century Victorian maritime merchant navy grog tub is a cylindrical sailor's rum barrel made of staved oak with a warm brown timber colour. It includes three polished brass binding hoops, a fitted flat wooden lid, and a central brass finial knob. The piece shows surface wear to the timber grain and minor marks on the lid from its naval past. The barrel measures 33 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 33 cm deep. Today, the piece suits domestic placement by a fireplace hearth or inside a gentleman's library. It serves practically as an ice bucket or decorative container for storage in a sitting room or study. The compact proportions allow it to sit easily beside other furniture while adding a traditional maritime accent to the interior.

FAQs

Naval grog tubs were specialised wooden vessels used aboard warships and merchant vessels from the 18th to the mid-20th century to mix spirits with water and citrus, serving the daily alcohol ration distributed to ship crews.

Grog tubs were typically constructed using durable hardwoods such as oak or teak held together with staves and bound with solid brass or copper hoops to resist corrosion in marine environments.

Authentic naval grog tubs display coopers stave construction, heavy brass or copper metal strapping, stencilled or carved lettering, and signs of authentic wood patination from saltwater exposure.

A grog tub serves as a textural accent piece when placed on a hearth, used as side storage in a gentlemans library, or displayed on a lower bookshelf alongside coastal elements.

Dust the timber staves regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the wood grain, while keeping brass elements clean without harsh chemicals.
