Eighteenth-century horological instruments were precision tools crafted by master watchmakers to measure small components for mechanical timepieces prior to mass standardisation.

These tools were typically constructed from a combination of forged steel for durability and brass for components requiring corrosion resistance and fine engraving.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-forged steel surfaces, hand-engraved maker marks, patination consistent with age, and traditional joinery methods such as pinned brass pivots.

They can be displayed within glass cabinets, mounted on bespoke stands, or arranged alongside other curiosities to add historical depth to a study or living space.

Preservation involves storing items in low-humidity environments and applying a microcrystalline wax to steel parts to prevent oxidisation while preserving the historic patina.
