Georgian Silver Compass by Dolland

18th century
Description

A good example of an early silver cased long neck compass by Dollond of London. It is a good quality piece with a bar needle which can be locked in place during transit using a small switch behind the neck of the handle.

The sterling silver case is hallmarked inside the back for London, 1799 and the white face has the maker's name "Dollond. London".

It is in good condition for its age although there is a crack on the edge of the glass face (see photo) and some other surface scratches. The glass would probably benefit from being replaced and the compass is priced to reflect this. The silver case has a few small marks and knocks but no major damages. The compass needle moves readily and appears to be reading accurately.

Approximate Measurements :

Height inc Handle : 2 1/2" / 6.5cm

Diameter : 1 1/2” / 4cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
