French marquetry involves the artful application of small pieces of veneer to form decorative patterns, gaining prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries in royal courts and fine cabinet-making.

These pieces typically utilise a sturdy carcase timber such as oak or pine, surfaced with exotic veneer hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, rosewood, and kingwood, often accented with gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneer irregularities, natural oxidisation under the polish, traditional joinery methods, and meticulous attention to detail within the floral or geometric motifs.

Pair the traditional piece with contemporary upholstery or minimal accessories to create a striking contrast that highlights the intricate woodwork without overwhelming the space.

Keep wooden furniture out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or cracking, and clean periodically with a soft cloth using natural beeswax polish.
