Description

This is rare and unusual 18th century oak artists table. Really smart design and totally original condition. When not in use this looks like a nice quality 18th century Low boy making it very decorative. But for those that know this turns into a rare surviving piece of furniture with a fully adjustable top and oak rail as well as two pull out stands, one at each side originally for brushes and water. Lovely interesting piece of furniture that is also practical as the drawer is very generous.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Eighteenth-century oak tables are characterised by sturdy timber construction, simple rectangular proportions, and functional designs often utilised for writing, drafting, or general household utility.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid English oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and fitted with hand-cast brass hardware such as drop handles andescutcheons.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetail joints in drawer construction, natural timber shrinkage, and a deep, oxidised patina accumulated over centuries.

This table works well as a grounding element in a study or living space, paired with contemporary seating to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourish the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
