A pot a orange is a heavy earthenware vessel produced in French ceramic centres such as Nevers during the 18th century. Originally designed to house orange trees and citrus plants, these vessels feature tin glazes and hand-painted decorations inspired by rural landscapes or classical motifs.

Nevers faience was constructed from refined terracotta clay coated in an opaque tin glaze. Craftsmen applied metal oxide pigments, primarily cobalt blue, directly onto the unfired glaze before subjecting the vessel to a single high-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces display distinct signs of hand-throwing, minor glaze crawling, pinholes, and natural edge wear where the thin tin glaze has flaked to reveal the reddish earthenware body beneath. Brushwork shows painterly variations typical of 18th-century artisan execution rather than uniform transfer printing.
