Antique French White Homespun Monogrammed Dowry Sheet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

An antique French monogrammed double dowry sheet of snowy white soft homespun monogrammed H.L. in raised stumpwork stitches, made from two lengths of homespun joined down the centre with tiny hand-stitching.

In excellent, clean condition. I'm not sure of the composition of the homespun but it's very soft and tactile which would indicate it's linen and perhaps nettle. The top and bottom hems are machine stitched. It's a heavyweight sheet with great texture and drape and would be also suitable for use as a curtain or throw.

226cm wide and 312cm long. Each letter measures 9cm cm 5cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French dowry sheet, or trousseau sheet, is a handwoven textile historically prepared by or for a young woman in preparation for marriage. These linens were hand-spun, handwoven, and often embroidered with the initials of the bride or the couple.

These sheets were crafted from hand-spun flax or hemp fibers woven on narrow household looms. Because the looms were narrow, two panels were frequently joined together down the centre with fine hand-stitching to create a full-width sheet.

Authentic pieces display distinct slubs and variations in the hand-spun yarn, a visible central seam stitched by hand, and raised embroidered initials. The fabric carries a substantial weight and texture that differs significantly from modern machine-woven linens.

These versatile textiles can be draped across the foot of a bed, styled as a lightweight sofa throw, tailored into bespoke cushion covers, or hung as sheer window drapes.

Wash the linen in cool or warm water using a mild textile detergent, avoiding harsh bleach agents. Line drying is recommended to maintain the fiber strength, and ironing while slightly damp smooths the heavy weave.
