Description

A rare pair of Barr, Flight and Barr Worcester chamber candlesticks, circa 1810. Of boat shape with scrolling gilt strap handles, the nozzles raised on gilded gadrooned stems, the salmon-pink ground exteriors moulded with horizontal bands simulating planks, finely painted with wide borders of colourful flowers against black grounds to the interior rims, the centres and nozzles gilt with caillouté, a formal border of gilded scrollwork below the nozzle rims, 16cm long, printed marks referring to Coventry St address.

One illustrated by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.153, fig.15.6. The boat-like form of these chambersticks is most unusual and would appear to be unique.

Condition: Both with restoration to the base of each sconce and where it joins the handle. Restoration to the sconce of one and restored chip to the rim of the other.

Date of Manufacture

Fine Antique English Porcelain has dated these Worcester Porcelain Chambersticks to the Georgian era.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barr, Flight and Barr operated the Royal Worcester factory during the early nineteenth century and held royal warrants, known for producing exceptional quality porcelain with elaborate gilding and hand-painted decoration for the elite.

These items were crafted from fine bone china or soft-paste porcelain bodies, meticulously hand-painted with polychrome enamel florals and finished with raised fire-gilded gold accents.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paste, the quality of the hand painting, the presence of underglaze or impressed factory marks typical of the period, and characteristic wear patterns on the base.

They function effectively as decorative accent objects when placed upon mantelpieces, sideboards, or bookshelf displays, adding historical texture and refined colour to a room.

Antique porcelain should be cleaned strictly by hand using a soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical detergents or immersion in water to protect fragile enamels and delicate gilding.
