Antique Welsh Hand Stitched Reversible Quilt

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

An antique Welsh hand-stitched reversible broadcloth quilt, early 20th century, one side in a deep gold cotton sateen, the reverse in a slate grey/blue, the central medallion and quartered fan borders within double line borders and further wide borders of fans and overlapping concentric quartered circles. Completeley hand stitched other the machine sewn edge and where the fabric widths are joined.

The quilt is quite heavyweight and I believe has wool battoning. In very good condition with no fading or staining. There are two very small areas of wear to the gold side and a larger area of wear to the sateen on the blue side (see photographs).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Welsh wholecloth quilting developed as a distinct regional craft during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, characterised by using continuous lengths of fabric rather than pieced scraps. Local itinerant quilters often travelled between farms to stitch these items, creating defined regional patterns that were passed down through generations.

These quilts were typically constructed using silk, satin, fine wool, or cotton top fabrics paired with natural wool wadding produced in local mills. The layers were joined using fine cotton or silk thread, executed entirely by hand with short, consistent running stitches.

Authentic pieces are identified by their characteristic motif layouts, including central medallions, spiral scrolls, leaves, and feather stitching. They also feature dense hand-stitching tension that creates a textured, raised relief surface across wholecloth panels rather than patchwork blocks.

Designers frequently layer these textiles across the foot of a bed over neutral linen sheets to add texture and visual depth. They can also be folded over a sofa end, placed over an upholstered bench, or hung on a neutral wall as decorative textile art.

Historic textiles should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fiber degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should be undertaken by a specialist textile conservator, and storage requires folding with acid-free tissue paper inside breathable cotton storage bags.
