This Oriental bamboo half moon console table belongs to the Aesthetic Movement and dates from circa 1900. It presents a warm brown tortoiseshell finish with a black lacquered semicircular demilune top. The design incorporates geometric fretwork along the apron, turned bamboo supports, and a lower stretcher shelf resting on short upright feet. Signs of age-related wear appear across the wood surface, which remains in good condition. The table stands 85 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. Position this console table beside the front door in a hallway beneath a mirror, or use it in a sunlit conservatory for serving drinks. It functions well as a decorative surface for displaying items or welcoming guests. The compact depth allows placement in narrow entranceways or passageways.

FAQs

During the late Victorian era and the Aesthetic Movement, European fascination with East Asian art led to a major trend in bamboo furniture. European makers imported structural bamboo and crafted lightweight, decorative tables featuring orientalist motifs and geometric lattice work.

These tables are constructed using hollow bamboo canes bent or joined with hidden wooden dowels and metal pins. The surface often includes lacquered wooden panels or woven matting, while the bamboo itself is frequently scorched to create a speckled tortoiseshell effect.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display genuine age-related surface wear, deep patination, and hand-fitted construction joints. Modern reproductions often use synthetic lacquers, uniform machine-cut bamboo, and modern screws instead of traditional dowels and pins.

A demilune bamboo console table works as a focal point in a modern hallway, entryway, or landing due to its flat-backed profile. Its warm organic texture pairs well with contemporary neutral walls, minimalist mirrors, and potted botanical displays.

Keep bamboo furniture away from direct heat sources and central heating vents to prevent the canes from drying out and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the tortoiseshell finish.
