This 1920s decorative object takes the form of a figural sculpture in the Art Deco style, modelled as a kneeling boy supporting a shell-shaped tray overhead. Constructed from hand-painted chalkware with a polychrome finish, the piece displays visible wear to the paintwork alongside chipping and surface losses particularly along the edges of the bowl and base. The boy wears a blue shirt, brown shorts with shoulder straps, and kneels upon a rectangular plinth. Measuring 61 cm high, 27 cm wide and 24 cm deep, this stand functions practically as a catchall dish or decorative piece for placement upon a sideboard top in a living area or hallway. The compact footprint permits display within domestic interior settings ranging from maximalist spaces to eclectic vintage rooms.

FAQs

During the 1920s, decorative figural stands featuring sculpted human figures holding trays or basins became popular interior accents across Europe, heavily influenced by Italian and French novelty plaster craft traditions.

These pieces were typically cast from plaster or chalkware before being hand-painted in polychrome finishes, with interior surfaces sometimes featuring gilded or bronzed metallic paint.

Genuine period examples display age-appropriate wear to painted surfaces, subtle paint loss along elevated edges, hand-brushed pigments, and a heavy plaster core rather than modern synthetic resins.

Position the stand on a hallway console table or sideboard as a decorative catch-all tray for daily items, or use it on a side table to display small ornamental objects.

Dust gentle surfaces with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural feather duster, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that can dissolve delicate antique paint layers.
