A leg of mutton gun case is a traditional shaped leather case designed to transport a disassembled shot-gun or rifle, featuring a wider end for the stock and a narrow end for the barrels.

These cases were typically constructed from heavy-duty saddlery leather, often lined with baize, fleece, or flannel, and fitted with brass buckles and leather carrying straps.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct stitching, heavy harness leather showing natural patination, solid brass hardware, and traditional makers stamps or embossing.

These items are frequently displayed in studies or hallways, often mounted on walls, placed in corners, or rested against bookcases to add historic character to a room.

Preservation involves cleaning dirt with a dry or slightly damp cloth and applying a specialized leather dressing or museum-grade wax to maintain suppleness and prevent cracking.
