Antique Walnut Occasional Or Lamp Table

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Culvertons

Normally, antique occasional tables that follow this design, are simply presented. However, the maker of this 1870s example wanted their table to stand out from the rest, keeping the understated outline but using the beauty of the timber as decoration. Walnut was very much in vogue during this period, and it has been used to great effect. The top has been decorated with matched leaves of burr walnut and banded with boxwood, ebony and tulipwood inlay. The barley-twist legs have been turned from straight grained walnut. The table as a whole, which was discovered in an old Surrey village post office, retains a very appealing warm colour. Now, after some sensitive restoration it is ready to be used and admired.
