Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Pierced Gothic tracery on clustered column legs: Victorian revival of eighteenth-century Chippendale patterns.
Deeply undercut rococo cartouche on the apron: crisp hand carving in dense mahogany.
Aged wax residue in the deeper carving: years of gradual build-up and polishing.
Subtle surface movement and deep patina on the top: aged solid timber construction.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large Victorian console table dates from 1860 and follows the Chinese Chippendale manner, constructed from dark brown mahogany with a moulded edge top. The piece includes a blind fret and pierced frieze, a carved central apron motif, and square pierced cluster legs on block feet. Measuring 87 cm high, 199.5 cm wide, and 81 cm deep, it provides a substantial surface for a hallway or entryway. Positioned beside the front door, the table serves as a statement surface for decorative items or everyday essentials in a traditional interior. The detailed fretwork and column-like cluster legs create a formal focal point suitable for an English Country House setting, combining functional table space with intricate period ornamentation.

FAQs

Chinese Chippendale style originated in 18th-century England, blending traditional Rococo proportions with Chinoiserie elements such as geometric fretwork, pagoda motifs, lattice patterns, and clustered column legs.

Victorian craftspeople primarily used solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak framing, utilizing traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved blind and open fretwork detailing.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces display hand-cut joinery, sharp hand-carved fretwork depth, original timber oxidisation on unpolished undersides, and substantial weight characteristic of solid dense mahogany.

Positioning a carved mahogany table against neutral painted walls allows the intricate fretwork silhouette to stand out, balanced with minimalist table lamps or contemporary artwork overhead.

Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth removes debris from carved crevices, while periodic applications of natural beeswax maintain timber hydration and preserve the original surface patination.
