French Wicker Grape Pickers Hod (Chablis)

18th century
Description

A French woven wicker grape picking hod ('hotte') from the Chablis region. Later 19th century.

Originally, it would have had straps for the harvester to wear it on their back.

These wicker hottes were used all over France, with the different wine regions having slightly different shapes of hod.

A lovely decorative item and a piece of wine making history.
