This nineteenth century French grape picking hotte is a functional harvesting basket designed in the French Country style from the 1900 period. Constructed from sheet metal with a black painted finish and later paint decoration, the piece displays visible surface wear including minor dings and a distressed texture across the dark surface. Hand-painted gold lettering reads Chateauneuf du-Pape, complemented by a central crest motif featuring a papal tiara emblem above crossed keys. The curved, tapered body has a wide scalloped rim at the top and a narrow flat base underneath. Measuring 78 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 31 cm deep, the hotte functions practically as a hearth accessory for holding logs or kindling. Placed by a fireplace in a modern living space or hallway, the item serves as a decorative storage container with vintage character.

A hotte is a specialized back-basket historically used in French vineyards during the annual grape harvest. Vineyard workers carried these tapered containers on their backs to collect harvested grapes before transferring them to larger barrels.

Earlier examples were woven from willow wicker, while 19th and early 20th-century models were typically fashioned from durable sheet iron or tin-plated metal. These metal containers were soldered, riveted, and painted with protective lacquer and estate insignia.

Authentic period examples feature hand-riveted seams, rolled sheet metal edges, and hand-painted lettering or coats of arms. Genuine age manifests as authentic wear on the base, natural oxidisation, and aged paint patination rather than uniform distressing.

These decorative metal containers are frequently repurposed as fireside log holders, umbrella stands in entrance halls, or striking planters in garden rooms. Their structured silhouette and graphic lettering add historical texture to modern rustic spaces.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to preserve the fragile hand-painted detail. Avoid water, harsh solvents, or abrasive cleaners that could strip original gilding or encourage rust formation.
